History of Woodward Oaks
The Burt and Bedell families owned the Woodward Oaks land for over 100 years. The land is now home to the family’s small, historical cemetery, which dates back to the 1800s. The cemetery is still owned by the Burt and Bedell families and will serve as a historical landmark for the family. The cornerstones of the original Bedell home site are still visible to this day close to the cemetery. Harris Doyle Homes purchased the land from an avid Auburn fan (War Eagle!). Though this Auburn lover never attended Auburn University, he considered himself a life-long Auburn football fan no matter where in the world he lived - even when he lived in Europe! Rumor has it, he would wake up in the early hours of the morning, despite the time difference, just to listen to the Tigers football game. The name Woodward Oaks is a nod to the original land owner’s maiden name – Woodward. Anne Woodward captured the heart of James Marshall Burt and they were said to be the most beautiful couple in Birmingham. The couple passed along the Woodward Oaks land to their son and the Burt family.
