In December 2014, The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB announced its controversial shutdown of the football program. Now, the program is going to be reinstated in 2016 due to donations from local Birmingham businesses, such as Harris Doyle Homes. According to CarrSports Consulting, in order for UAB to successfully invest in priority programs they needed to shutdown three programs; football was one. After the announcement was made, the UAB Football Foundation raised more than $15 million in donations to try and save the program. Businesses in Birmingham banned together in order to help bring the program back because the Blazers have such a positive impact on the local economy. In addition, external sources have pledged over $17.2 million in support. Many people in the Birmingham community, including these numerous businesses, are very excited for the Blazers’ comeback.
