According to Niche, Cary Woods Elementary School is the “#1 Best Public Elementary Schools in Alabama” with a student-teacher ratio of 16 to 1. Auburn City Schools has around 8,930 students in grades PK, K-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 18 to 1. According to state test scores, 72% of students are proficient in math and 64% in reading. 

Auburn-Opelika is affixed by two large universities. Southern Union State Community College  is a two-year community and technical college that provides academic, manufacturing, and health sciences programs. Southern Union is Lee County's only two-year college and the region's main two-year campus. Auburn University is based in the Auburn-Opelika area as well. Auburn University is one of the largest universities in the South, having been established in 1856. Auburn University is one of the area's biggest employers and continues to expand.
