Each year, on February 2nd, millions tune in to see if the groundhog will see his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter. This popular tradition, started in the late 1800’s, has become widespread with many cities featuring their own groundhog. The most famous groundhog remains Punxsutawney Phil, but residents of Birmingham new homes receive a local prediction from Birmingham Bill.
On Saturday morning, Birmingham Bill agreed with Punxsutawney Phil, finding no shadow and predicting an early spring. Other groundhogs including Staten Island Chuck, Ohio’s Buckeye Chuck and Jimmy the Groundhog (Sun Prairie, Wis.) all agreed by not seeing their shadow. General Beauregard Lee in Atlanta was one of few who went against his peers, predicting six more weeks of winter.
Since the inception of Groundhog Day in 1887, Phil has predicted a longer winter 100 times and an early spring 16 times. While his accuracy level is below 50%, Americans enjoy the fun and fanfare that comes along with Groundhog Day.
So will Bill and Phil be correct? Will we enjoy warmer weather in the six weeks to come or will colder weather prevail? Good news is that no matter what the temperatures are outside, now is a great time to purchase Birmingham real estate.
