Harris Doyle Homes’ co-president Brooks Harris has always been a hard worker. He’s the type of guy who is not afraid to take chances and who knows that success comes from never giving up.
From his first real job as a knife salesman to today, Brooks has never once settled for less than his best. His dedication, strong leadership and business savvy recently landed him on the Birmingham Business Journal’s Top 40 Under 40 for 2014.
“I was really excited,” Brooks said. “It’s an honor to be mentioned with all of the other esteemed men and women on the list.”
The son of a home builder, Brooks always wanted to own his own business and work for himself. He started early, selling knives for Cutco after his senior year in high school. His knack for customer service was immediately obvious. He quickly became one of the top 10 Cutco salespeople in the country.
He earned his MBA and started Longleaf Homes in 2004. The home building bug bit him and four years later he joined forces with Russ Doyle and the two established Harris Doyle Homes. Today the company is known as one of the best builders of new homes in the Birmingham area.
Brooks’ “never-give-up” attitude can be attributed to his heroes, the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team. Their victory over the Russian team has been called the greatest moment in U.S. sports history.
“They overcame an enormous challenge by having confidence in themselves and their teammates and I have made it a priority to assemble a team of employees that will do the same,” Brooks said.
Brooks does not take his success for granted. He has worked with Habitat for Humanity on five homes to date and is looking forward to continuing to give back to the community.
“God blesses us so that we can bless others, so my goal is simply to use the blessings that God gives me to have the greatest possible impact on people’s lives,” Brooks said.
Brooks has a bright future, but he is keeping his goals for this decade simple.
“In 10 years, I want to be teaching my son how to drive,” Brooks said. “I’ll be helping my daughter through the maze of high school and trying to stay an even-keeled guy.”
