Today’s new homes are far more energy efficient than homes built just a decade ago.  And compared to homes built 20 or more years ago, new homes are incredibly more energy efficient, resulting in substantial energy and cost savings. Combined, space cooling and heating make up 21 percent of residential electricity consumption in the U.S. (in 2009, the most recent year for which data is available), and combined, make up the largest share of U.S. residential electricity consumption[3]. In comparison, the median square footage of single-family homes built between 2005 and 2009 stands today at 2,200 square feet.
