The Birmingham ZooAre you looking for something fun to do over the long Labor Day weekend, but don’t want to deal with the extra expense or hassle of traveling? The city of Birmingham is the perfect place to spend a Labor Day “Staycation,” where you can enjoy all the comforts of your Harris Doyle home while still celebrating the unofficial end of summer and staying within a budget.

Check out these fantastic venues and events coming up this weekend:

Birmingham Zoo: Families can opt to enjoy a wild adventure at the Birmingham Zoo, visiting animals like the African elephant, Malayan tiger, red panda, green-winged Macaw, and many more. Guests who are seeking a breathtaking thrill won’t want to miss the chance to go for a ride on the Soaring Safari zip line! For a more laid-back day of exploration, relax and enjoy the excitement of the Red Diamond Sea Lion Splash Show, feed a giraffe at the Kiwanis Giraffe Encounter, take a train ride across the zoo or go for a spin on the zoo’s carousel.  Be sure to check out the butterflies in Granny’s Butterfly Garden before this special exhibit closes for the season. Celebrate one of the final days of summer by cooling off at the Children’ Zoo Splash Pads. The Birmingham Zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 per adult and $10 for children ages two to 12 years old.

Oak Mountain State Park: Grab your blankets and prepare a lunch to enjoy a peaceful picnic at the pavilions in this gorgeous 9,940 acre park, the largest in Alabama. Nature lovers will find an endless amount of things to do both on and off the water, including hiking, biking, swimming, fishing or canoeing. (Pedal boats and canoe rentals are also available). For avid golfers looking to practice their swing, check out the 18-hole golf course and driving range. Learn more about the Oak Mountain State Park amenities here.

Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park: Presented by the United Mine Workers, come out to the 23rd annual Labor Day celebration on September 1 where you and your family can enjoy live music, delicious barbecue and Alabama’s largest Moon Pie eatin’ contest. Cash prizes will be awarded for the winners in the children and adult categories. Conveniently, Tannehill is located in McCalla, Alabama and is approximately 20 minutes outside of Birmingham.

Steel City Pops:  Nothing is better on a hot day in the south than a sweet treat from Birmingham’s gourmet popsicle store, Steel City Pops.  These homemade, all-natural organic popsicles are a delicious way to cool down and come in more than 25 flavors. We’re also big fans of the unique venue and its laid-back vibe. We especially love the use of reclaimed wood on the front counter/freezer area! Steel City Pops in Birmingham is located at 5449 Highway 280.
